Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.
Police say they were alerted late on Wednesday, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Police then located many other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police report early analysis show the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no indication as to its source; investigators are not yet cognizant of any harm in association with the event," they added.
City officials announced they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the community for details.
A high-ranking official stated the attack made him stunned and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on online, referring to the murder of nine victims by a shooter aiming at residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
