Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
